£24m for Notts college rebuild

A cool £24m will be splashed on the rebuilding of a West Nottinghamshire College, This is Nottingham reports.

The massive “once in a generation” investment will see the construction of a state-of-the-art sportshall, a car park, and the modernisation of a six-storey tower block with new external cladding, at Mansfield’s Derby Road Campus.

The college is particularly proud of the tall tower block, as it is seen as a major landmark on the way to Mansfield, according to college principal and chief executive, Asha Khemka.

He told the local paper: “The rejuvenated college will act as a symbol of the area’s pride, ambitions and aspirations for the 21st Century,” admitting the some of the buildings on the Derby Road site were “looking quite tired.”

“By modernising our buildings, students will enjoy the very best teaching, learning and social space,” he said.

A new two-to-three storey building with house the hair, beauty and complimentary therapy courses that were formerly based in the town centre salon. Hospitality, leisure and travel students will also study in the refurbished and new buildings.

Mr Khemka insists the development will “completely transform the main campus and provide our growing student population with truly inspirational education and training opportunities.”

According to BBC News, a consultation is underway, with a planning application due for submission in June. Site work could begin in September and be completed by late 2013.
