Tata Steel supplied a total of approximately 22,000m2 of pre-finished steel roofing and cladding to provide the entire building envelope for New Earth Solutions’ new waste treatment and renewable energy facility in Avonmouth, Bristol.

Installation contractor MH Massey Roofing & Cladding Ltd specified Tata Steel’s R32, C32 and C19 roof and wall profiles in double-sided Colorcoat HPS200 Ultra® for the new facility, which has been developed to service New Earth Solutions’ residual waste management contracts with the West of England Partnership, comprising the four local authorities of Bath and North East Somerset, Bristol City, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire, and commercial businesses.

The scheme houses sustainable waste management technology to treat around 200,000 tonnes of household waste each year, diverting “black bin” waste away from landfill, using mechanical biological treatment (MBT) processes to recover recyclable material and produce a stabilised compost-like output for land remediation. The New Earth MBT process uses a mechanical separation system to extract valuable materials from mixed rubbish that would otherwise have been destined for landfill or incineration.

The organic waste fraction is composted in enclosed halls, creating a beneficial soil conditioner currently used to remediate closed landfill sites and return them to grassland or forest. The majority of the remaining waste, which cannot be recycled or composted, is turned into a refuse-derived fuel (RDF) for energy recovery.

Martin Massey, Managing Director, MH Massey Roofing and Cladding Ltd, said: “Avonmouth is located on the Severn Estuary where coastal environment conditions need to be taken into consideration when specifying materials used in the construction of buildings – specifically cladding and roofing.

“Additionally, in the instance of New Earth Solutions’ MBT facility, the cladding system also needed to have sufficient corrosion protection to ensure it is capable of withstanding the high humidity levels to which MBT processes give rise.”

Colorcoat HPS200 Ultra® uses a unique and proven Galvalloy® metallic coating featuring a special mix of 95% zinc and 5% aluminium. Essential to the performance of the pre-finished steel, the metallic coating offers a combination of increased barrier and sacrificial protection and ensures unrivalled corrosion protection, even at the cut edges.

Martin Massey continued: “Specifying double-sided Colorcoat HPS200 Ultra® sees the same topcoat and corrosion resistance primer applied to both sides of the metallic coated steel substrate. This provides the extra protection required for the demanding internal environment of the Avonmouth MBT facility where the internal walls and roofs are subjected to those factors which promote corrosion.”

Colorcoat HPS200 Ultra® has been tested to provide the highest level of corrosion protection for internal environments and is classified as a CPI5 product. This is the highest classification available for interiors and means that Colorcoat HPS200 Ultra® is suitable for use in the most demanding internal environments.

Having been specified with the market leading Confidex® Guarantee, the pre-finished steel is guaranteed for up to 40 years.

The project features a range of Tata Steel building envelope solutions. The R32 roof profile was selected in 0.7mm double-sided Colorcoat HPS200 Ultra®, creating a safe working platform during construction. A small amount of C19 profile was also used as a liner panel in certain areas. The C32 wall profile was selected in a mixture of single and double-sided Colorcoat HPS200 Ultra®. Goosewing Grey was the universal internal colour choice, with a mixture of Pure Grey and Albatross for the external finish on both roofs and walls.

In addition to required reassurance regarding the long term performance of buildings, sustainability – specifically the need to demonstrate that products have been responsibly sourced – is becoming an increasingly important issue across the construction industry.

Tata Steel is the first steel company to be certified to the BES 6001 Responsible Sourcing standard for its pre-finished steel products, including Colorcoat HPS200 Ultra® and Colorcoat Prisma®, and has been awarded a ‘very good’ rating.
