Cardiff unveils energy-efficient postgraduate building
Cardiff University has unveiled plans for its new postgraduate business school, according to walesonline.co.uk. Local councillors agreed the plans to build a state-of-the-art postgraduate teaching centre in Cathays, after developers showed off its potential by reaching a rating of ‘excellent’ in the BREEAM ratings.
Sustainable postgraduate teaching centre
Among the energy-saving features are rainscreen cladding in five colours, a “twin skin” construction system, rainwater harvesting and solar panelling.
Inside, the 5,200 square metre building will feature a dramatic, Harvard-style elliptical lecture theatre that can seat 250 students. It will also benefit from a two-storey teaching wing, four storey administration wing and a central breakout area.
There will also be a postgraduate common room on the first floor and another smaller lecture hall. The building is topped with an external patio and biodiversity roof.
Cardiff University’s newest addition will be built on the site of a previous car park that covered 1.4 acres. It will be easily accessible; benefiting from a bridge across the railway line to help pedestrians.
Flexible teaching space
A council report printed on treehugger.com explained the project in further detail:
“The concept for the design of the new Cardiff Business School was for a building of landmark quality, delivering flexible teaching space with modular office allocations that could be adapted to the changing needs and requirements of the university.”
