China sets sights on world’s tallest building – in just 90 days
A Chinese construction company known for its fast-builds is attempting its biggest feat yet – creating a new 200-storey building in just 90 days.
Designbuildsource.com.au reports that Broad Sustainable Building (BSB) will greatly rely on pre-fabricated elements to see its dream come to fruition. This could include components such as cladding panels, girders and concrete foundations.
The head-turning aspect of the 838-meter tall skyscraper – currently named Sky City One – is that BSB not only wants it to be earthquake resistant, but green too.
Will use just one-fifth of the amount of energy as a regular building
BSB’s building pre-fab building practice will minimise waste and lower its embodied energy costs. The build is predicted to be cheaper than Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, at just $628 million compared to an estimated $1.5 billion. What’s more is that when it’s finished, Sky City One – which will house over 100,000 people in homes and offices – will use just one-fifth of the amount of energy as a regular building.
Previous achievement: 30-storey hotel in just 15 days
While the build might seem overly ambitious, BSB has defied the odds before. Previous achievements include building a three-storey development in nine days and a 30-storey hotel in just 15 days.
Sky City One
The Sky City One proposal has its doubters though, such as construction competitor Gensler – which said on zmescience.com:
“It’s very hard to believe that [BSB] will be able to build an 800-plus-meter skyscraper in [such a short period of time].”
What could possibly go wrong?
If BSB gets the green light then construction could start in November 2012 and be finished by January 2013.
