Colorcoat makes a dramatic aesthetic statement

23 January 2012 No Comment

When construction began on one of the largest distribution centres in the UK, providing a whopping 127,210m² of industrial, storage and distribution facilities. Colorcoat® pre-finished steel helped this major new £77 million distribution centre in Swindon make a dramatic aesthetic statement whilst achieving environmental excellence.

Striking blue facade

Gazeley Park, which was completed by Gazeley on behalf of B&Q six weeks ahead of schedule in March 2011, is one of the largest distribution centres in the UK.

Designed by Chetwood Associates – one of the UK’s top 20 architects – and built by McLaren Construction in association with FK Roofing Services, the Swindon site with a prime location, has excellent links to the M4 and national motorway network.

Eye-catching exterior

The largest of the three units, which offers 74,000m² of prime space, was pre-sold to B&Q before construction began. This unit will be B&Q’s main distribution centre for the South of England, and when fully operational, it will provide 550 jobs.

The structure’s striking blue facade has been achieved using 140,000m² of Colorcoat Prisma® and Colorcoat HPS200 Ultra® pre-finished steel in Gazeley Blues – Blue White, Chalk Blue, White Lilac, Bluebell, Baltic Blue, and Pastel Blue for its exterior cladding. These products have excellent colour and gloss retention properties to enhance the external appearance of the building envelope.

Additionally, the Colorcoat® products that have been used are covered by the Tata Steel Confidex® guarantee. This is the most comprehensive product performance guarantee for pre-finished steel in Europe. Providing assurance for 40 years, it is maintenance and inspection free.

Sustainable design to maximise energy efficiency

Gazeley Park has been designed to maximise energy efficiency and reduce CO2 emissions, and features a raft of eco measures including rainwater harvesting and microgeneration.

Colorcoat Prisma® and Colorcoat HPS200 Ultra® pre-finished steel play a major part in the site’s drive for sustainable excellence – the products can be fully recycled over and over, each time retaining the same properties of the original product. This minimises waste and reduces demand for natural resources, making the whole lifecycle sustainability credentials of the products very strong.

BES 6001 Responsible Sourcing standard

Tata Steel is the first pre-finished steel company to be certified to the universal BES 6001 Responsible Sourcing standard ‘very good’ rating for its metal cladding Colorcoat® products manufactured at Shotton. This rating reinforces Tata Steel’s ongoing commitment to meeting the sustainability agenda, informing best practice across the construction industry.
