Tata Steel scores at the Millennium Stadium

1 February 2012 No Comment

The Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, the biggest stadium of its kind in the world, kicked off a new era in sporting and entertainment venues when it launched in 1999 for the Rugby World Cup.

Scoring awards for its innovative design, the stadium – which is the spiritual home of Welsh Rugby Union – also won praise for the unique use of Colorcoat® by Tata Steel in creating a building which gives sporting spectators and concert-goers an inviting rather than an imposing welcome.

Innovative sports and entertainment arena

Seating a massive crowd of 75,000 people – who come to watch everything from rugby, rallying, cricket and boxing to sell-out performances by some of the world’s biggest entertainers including Madonna and Sir Paul McCartney – the Millennium Stadium is an immense building which could easily have dominated its location.

Contemporary colours were used to dramatic effect

Thanks to the clever use of Colorcoat® pre-finished steel cladding, the national stadium of Wales is bold yet blends in with its surroundings. Colorcoat® panels in contemporary colours were used to dramatic effect to create the design scheme for the walls. The delicate shades of green, blue and purple complement the vivid Poppy Red from the Colorcoat HPS200® (now superceded by Colorcoat HPS200 Ultra®) range, which was used to form one continuous, running band of colour around the entire stadium.

Colorcoat® gives a winning finish to any building

In both solid and metallic shades, and with a Repertoire® colour-matching service, Colorcoat® pre-finished steel gives a winning finish to any building, offering unrivalled corrosive resistance, superior colour retention and a unique Confidex® guarantee.

The Millennium Stadium is a sizeable example of how coloured cladding can be used to lessen the visual impact of a building whilst simultaneously bringing it to life. But prizes aren’t just reserved for the teams which play on the stadium’s turf.

The innovative use of Colorcoat® panels as a design tool was officially recognised with the ‘Best Use of Colour’ award in the 11th annual Colorcoat® Building Awards, along with a run of other trophies for the stadium including the Tata Steel (formerly Corus) Construction Award for the Millennium and a Celebration in Constructing Achievement Award.
