ComFlor® becomes a top performer at Leeds Arena
Over 9000m2 of ComFlor® structural decks have been installed on the new £60 million Leeds Arena, as part of a complex acoustic roof construction aimed at minimising external noise levels around the venue’s highly populated city centre location.
When it is opened in summer 2013, the 12,500 seat Leeds Arena will host both music and sports events. It is being built in a traditional fan-shaped seating layout, to create what has been termed a “supertheatre”, breaking the conventional mould of large –scale entertainment arena design. This configuration ensures that all spectators are seated relatively close to the centre of the action.
Leeds Arena features a double-layered acoustic roof to satisfy the project’s exacting requirement for external noise levels to be 10dB lower than ambient noise levels outside the building.
The initial internal roof layer comprises a perforated liner tray supporting two layers of insulation, an 8mm thick acoustic barrier sandwiched between two layers of plywood, topped by a further insulation layer.
Over 8000m2 of ComFlor® 60 with closed ends are situated 1.2 metres above the first roof layer, to form a base for the main external 150mm steel mesh reinforced concrete roof, covered with an insulated hot melt membrane system.
Over 1000m2 of ComFlor® 51 have been used in mansard areas that support a framework to accept insulated metal cladding to create seamless visual continuity with the walls.
The project used the biggest concrete pump in the UK, with a reach of 63m. The roof spans 70 metres at its widest point, supported by 14 7m deep trusses.
