Kings Cross concourse launched

22 March 2012 No Comment

A new £500 million concourse has been unveiled at King’s Cross station, just in time for the Olympic Games, reports BBC News. The new development forms the centrepiece of the rail network’s ‘Gateway to the North’ plan; also representing the most striking aspect of the vast steel and glass-lattice work roof.

Steel web-like roof

The steel web-like roof is truly a sight to behold, with about 15 per cent of the roof cladding being glazed; as well as a central skylight allowing plenty of natural light through. As a result, the roof is officially Europe’s largest single-span station structure.

A Network Rail spokesman commented on the build, cited by Mail Online as saying:

“The shell shaped glass and steel building provides three times the space of the current station concourse, with better facilities, new links with the Tube, better links to St Pancras station, more shops and restaurants, larger destination boards and clearer station announcements.”

The spokesman added.

“From next Monday, passengers leaving on trains from King’s Cross will need to enter the station from the stunning new building on the western side of the Grade 1 listed station,”

Described as the biggest transformation by the history of the station, the restoration of the Grade 1-listed building is part of a further £2.2 billion redevelopment of the area.
