Ondrej Nepela Arena for the IIHF World Championship 2011
The striking and contemporary Ondrej Nepela Arena was created as the centrepiece for the International Ice Hockey Federation 2011 World Championship.
With the eyes of the ice hockey world on the arena, Bratislava was keen to make a bold statement. An extensive remodelling programme on the site of Slovakia’s oldest ice hockey stadium resulted in a stunning steel and glass envelope encasing world-class facilities and state-of-the-art technology.
Complex angular steel façade
To create the complex, angular steel façade, the site developers chose the modular façade system, Qbiss One, manufactured by Trimo d.d. The façade’s outer lining is made from Colorcoat Prisma®, a high quality pre-finished steel from Tata Steel perfect for steel cladding applications.

Aesthetics and functionality were prime considerations in the transformation of this historic stadium into a top-class 21st century facility. The performance and visual impact of the building’s outer envelope were vitally important. It was imperative that the steel façade system should not only meet the exacting, angular design requirements but also stand the test of time and the elements.
“A world-class facility requires a world-class solution. Our Qbiss One modular façade system provided the optimum solution for the outer envelope. The system’s outer lining is made from Colorcoat Prisma® pre-finished steel.”
“We use Colorcoat Prisma® in Qbiss One because of its outstanding, proven performance and ease of configuration in even the most complex of designs,” Qbiss Product Manager, Ronald Jurovic.
The façade’s outstanding colour retention and corrosion resistance have been achieved through the use of Colorcoat Prisma® superior pre-finished steel in the Qbiss One system. The durability of Colorcoat Prisma® is derived from its multi-layer construction – with each layer performing a specific function.
The Galvalloy™ metallic coating and high-build primer provide corrosion resistance. The topcoat utilises the latest polymer technology to provide abrasion and UV resistance. This allows all solid and metallic colours in Colorcoat Prisma® to surpass the requirements of RUV4 and RC5 certification as per EN 10169:2010.
Sleek, ‘Zeus’ metallic colour
The Ondrej Nepela Arena façade sports the sleek, ‘Zeus’ metallic colour from the wide range of Colorcoat Prisma® colours. All colours in the range have been subjected to comprehensive testing involving both natural and artificial exposure.

“The Ondrej Nepela Arena must stand as a symbol of building excellence for many years to come. By utilising Colorcoat Prisma® we are confident that the building will withstand the environmental conditions – providing lasting performance and aesthetic appeal over the coming decades,” Qbiss Product Manager, Ronald Jurovic.
