In the UK for rainscreens, aluminium has traditionally been the preferred product of choice. But for the sophisticated look of a traditional rainscreen, without the expense, have you considered steel?

Steel rainscreens are the preferred choice

Due to its 1.2mm thickness, steel rainscreens offer an excellent flatness for façade panels and robustness to both the internal microclimate and external environment. Steel rainscreen cladding is the preferred choice in Eastern Europe and Russia because of their performance and cost effectiveness.

Colorcoat Prisma® by Tata Steel has a unique Galvalloy® metallic coating, providing unrivalled corrosion protection, even at the cut edges. A high build robust paint system, which is made up of a number of layers and once applied, provides excellent abrasion and UV resistance.

This same paint system is applied to the reverse side of the steel, to deal with the humid atmosphere created between the rainscreen and the building wall.

Highest corrosion rating possible

The performance of a rainscreen isn’t compromised when using steel, having carried out tests on 1.2mm Colorcoat Prisma® pre-finished steel, the highest corrosion rating possible was achieved (RC5 according to standard EN 10169:2010). Cut edge performance testing was also undertaken using SVRET (Scanning Vibrating Reference Electrode Technique).

The results were excellent in all natural and accelerated weathering tests, confirming the superior performance of Galvalloy® metallic coating, coupled with the high corrosion resistant primer in protecting the exposed edge.

Backed by a 25 year guarantee

As well as traditional solid and metallic colours, Tata Steel offer matt shades as standard providing less glare. So there is no need to compromise aesthetics. Backed by a 25 year guarantee, the finish will look as good as the day it was installed for years to come.

BES6001 responsible sourcing certification

Sustainability assessment tools such as BREEAM recognise the importance of responsibly sourced products, specifying Colorcoat® products can help to gain maximum BREEAM credits, as Tata Steel is the first pre-finished steel manufacturer to secure BES6001 responsible sourcing certification.

Steel is also fully recyclable without any additional burden to the environment in terms of emissions to the atmosphere, and can be recycled over and over without loss of properties or performance. There is a very efficient steel recycling infrastructure, which enables all the scrap collected at the end of life to go back into steel manufacture.
