Sustainability at the ‘core’ of new data centres

25 May 2011 No Comment

Many new data centres and facilities for cloud computing will place sustainability at the “core” of their architectural design. That was the opinion of MacArthur Stroud International, a market research firm whose CEO, Hamish MacArthur made the comments.

He claimed that in order for data centres (which use tremendous amounts of energy) to remain efficient, they had to look to energy-saving measures.

Architecture and design considerations

MacArthur confirmed on OneStopClick.com: “It is when there are pressures on energy supply or when new data centres are being deployed that architecture and design considerations will focus on energy usages, and energy savings are maximised.”

This may mean architectural designers utilise things such as renewable energy sources such as photovoltaics and transpired solar collectors, both of which are easily integrateable with metal roofing or external cladding in their designs. Designers working on existing buildings may also add the sustainable resources into their infrastructure, in order to balance out the extra energy used by newly-installed cloud computing facilities.

QAS.com reported that many data centres had already taken MacArthur’s lead, citing a recent study that found there were “significant advances in making data centres more energy efficient.”

However the environmental charity Greenpeace refuted these claims, arguing that the IT sector appeared to be “largely ignoring” the rise in renewable energy sources for data centres.
