With buildings dating back to 1911, Jarrow School, a designated Specialist School of Engineering in Tyne and Wear, was in need of modernisation. Rebuilt as part of the Building Schools for the Future programme, the brief to architects Ryder Architecture was to create a modern state-of-the-art building with striking design elements.

Stadium-like space

The solution they therefore came up with was to design the school around a stadium-like space from which five ‘wings’ extend to provide multi-purpose teaching blocks with large windows to maximise natural light.

Sitting prominently within the local community, the design of the new building means that each wing can be secured independently and hired out for use by community clubs and organisations. The demolition of the old school also made way for a brand new sports area, including tennis courts, football fields, netball courts and a race track.

Aesthetics were an important design consideration, and the steel clad walls feature accent colours in blue and yellow, to match the school logo whilst also creating a striking modern exterior. Tata Steel supplied 2,000m2 of Colorcoat HPS200 Ultra® pre-finished steel in Lemon Yellow, Wedgewood Blue and Albatross, set in rectangular blocks and framed by prominent black edges. The result is a bold, dynamic and unique design.

Durability and sustainable credentials

Selecting products capable of meeting tough educational design requirements, with durability and sustainable credentials is no easy feat. Tata Steel’s Colorcoat HPS200 Ultra® pre-finished steel lends itself to such a project as it is both robust and durable, which means that the school buildings will stand the test of time.

In addition, Colorcoat HPS200 Ultra® delivers twice the colour and gloss retention of alternative products, ensuring the external cladding of the school will retain its vibrant exterior shell for an extended period.

The school needed to remain fully operational whilst the new buildings were being constructed, so there was a requirement to optimise health and safety performance on the site given the volume of students who would be present at any one time. The advantage gained by specifying a steel solution was that the pre-finished steel for the walls could be manufactured off-site in the UK, with staged deliveries to site to facilitate a more efficient installation, and predictable build programme.

Confidex® Guarantee

Like many new builds, maintenance cost was a major consideration for the project. Of significant benefit in specifying Colorcoat HPS200 Ultra® by Tata Steel was the associated Confidex® Guarantee that covers the wall cladding for 40 years, maintenance and inspection free, increasing the longevity of the investment.
