Tata Steel’s Rich Profiling Heritage
Did you know Tata Steel’s profiling operation in the UK has been around for half a century?
Originally Precision Metal Forming (PMF), we have been through many changes and still maintain our position in the UK market.
Reflecting on the achievements of the business, Jo Evans, Commercial Director, comments: “In the 17 years of working in the profiling industry I have seen and been through many changes, and our business has been evolving more than twice that time. Today we offer the most sophisticated and widest range yet, including composite panels, building envelope and structural products. It is perhaps a timely moment to reflect on the history of our business and roots that have supported the vast depth of knowledge and technical expertise that still lies within the business to this current day.
“We started in Cheltenham, where the primary function of the business at the time was the production of sheet metal roofing and cladding and decking, and fabrications such as garage doors, gutters and flashings. We were assisted early on by the decline of asbestos sheeting and the development of colour coated steel, which soon became ubiquitous as British Steel Colorcoat.
“Over the years, new lines were introduced at Cheltenham, manufacturing an ever-widening range of profiled building envelope and structural products including composite flooring in the 1980’s Factory capacity was increased and PMF grew to what at the time was the largest profiling operation in Europe
“In 1999 we saw the merger of steel giants British Steel with Dutch steel maker, Hoogovens, and Corus was born. This merger brought together the PMF operation with other market leading downstream businesses: – European Profiles (E.P) Celtic Profiles and Cladding and Decking.
“Corus Panels and Profiles in its entirety relocated to the Shotton site in Flintshire late 2008, bringing together the manufacture of panel and profiled steel products and Colorcoat pre-finished steel at one manufacturing plant. The move, whilst a challenge, brought service, supply chain and sustainability benefits to the operation.
“Whilst we continued under the Corus brand until 2011, Tata Steel acquired Corus in 2007, adding to their already impressive portfolio of companies, Jaguar Landrover and Tetley Tea, to name just a few. With an ever increasing requirements for building compliance, we have continued to be at the forefront of technical support and development, providing the broadest range of products; – Trisobuild – built up systems, RoofDek – structural roof decks, ComFlor – composite floor decking, Trisomet – composite panels, Trimapanel – composite wall panels and Stratascreen façades.
“Our journey continues in 2013 with an ever widening range of technical support services, in response to the needs of our customers in an ever more complex market place. Enhancements now include a wide range of design and analytical software and ever-expanding online resources such as our website and blogs, providing a wealth of vital information, advice and architectural inspiration. Our field technical support team has never been busier.
“Precision Metal Forming – Corus Panels and Profiles – Tata Steel – 50 years of manufacturing, underlining our involvement throughout a revolutionary period that has seen an explosion in the use of metal building envelope and structural decking systems.”
